Ala Kol Lake: A Trekker’s Delight

Jyrgalan Valley: Off the Beaten Path
Our journey concludes in the remote Jyrgalan Valley, a hidden paradise for nature lovers. This untouched wilderness offers a plethora of outdoor activities, including hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching. Immerse yourself in the local culture by staying in a traditional yurt and savoring delicious Kyrgyz cuisine.
DAY 1: Karakol Town – Jyrgalan Village – Terimtor Valley
Transfer from Karakol to Jyrgalan ~1 hour (60km). Starting our 8 days trekking. Overnight in the yurt camp (Elevation: 3450m). Overnight in Yurt camp at 3200m.

DAY 2: Terimtor Valley – Boz Uchuk Lakes
Breakfast. Today, we will traverse two mountain passes. The first is the Bulak-Ashuu Pass at an elevation of 3450 meters. Afterward, we will ascend from the valley floor to the 3363-meter Boz-Uchuk Pass. We will stop along the way for lunch. Our camp will be set up next to the Boz-Uchuk Lakes, which are at the same altitude as the pass. If we arrive early enough to still have some daylight, the northern tip of the stubby ridge marking the western boundary of the valley offers stunning sunset views facing back towards the Issyk-Kol basin. However, many find it hard to tear themselves away from the beauty of the Boz-Uchuk Lakes. We will spend the night in a yurt camp at an elevation of 3450 meters.

DAY 3: Bozuchuk lakes – Jergez Gorge
Early breakfast due to the long day ahead. Today’s route begins by crossing the small ridge immediately west of camp and descending to the main valley floor below. We will follow the trail uphill, paralleling the river for around 2 km before crossing it and heading more steeply uphill to the obvious pass in the distance at 3524 meters. From the top, the Jergez Valley spreads out below, with an excellent view of Tashtanbek Tor Bashi peak dominating the southern horizon. We will then descend to the camp for lunch. After lunch, we will hike to the waterfall and back. Overnight and dinner in yurts.

DAY 4: Jergez gorge – Almaluu Gorge
Breakfast. From the camp, the trail continues towards the first Ailanysh Lake at 3445 meters, already visible to the southwest across the valley. We will cross the Jergez River and ascend the first stretch of the Ailanysh Valley. The climb steepens past the second lake, leading up to the Ailanysh Pass at 3676 meters. About 5 km into the final descent of the day, as the trail curves just above the main branch of the Ak-Suu River, we will witness unbelievable views of an unnamed 3855-meter peak and the blinding snowy whiteness of the Ak-Suu Wall’s glaciated slopes. We will spend the night in yurts at an elevation of 2750 meters.

DAY 5: Almaluu – Altyn Arashan Gorge
Today’s a relatively easy day in terms of distance, but it begins with an 800m+ climb to Ortok Pass at 3650 meters. The trail continues along the east side of the river to the main Ak-Suu Arashan valley. After lunch, we will take a short walk to the wild hot springs and enjoy a dip in the hot springs that have made the valley locally famous since before the Soviet era. Rest up tonight, because tomorrow is a long but rewarding uphill day. Overnight in a guesthouse at an elevation of 2500 meters.

DAY 6: Altyn Arashan – Keldike Valley
Breakfast. Today, we will trek to another pass called Ala-Kul Pass. From Altyn Arashan, we will cross the large bridge to the west side of the Ak-Suu River and continue south for just over 2 km to the first large valley that rises off to the southwest. From the turn out of the Arashan Valley, it’s around an 8 km uphill climb, rising from 2570 meters at the valley floor to 3860 meters at the Ala-Kul North Pass. We will camp and sleep just below the pass. Overnight in a yurt camp at an elevation of 3550 meters.

DAY 7: Keldike Valley – Sirota Yurt Camp
From the camp, we will start ascending to Ala-Kul Pass at 3860 meters. At the top of the pass, you will see the most prominent summits, including Djigit Peak (5178 meters), Karakol Peak (5216 meters), and Öguz-Bashi Peak (5126 meters). Expect around two hours for the full 4 km of hiking, possibly more if you are generally slow on downhills. Our camp will be located at 2800 meters.

DAY 8: Sirota Yurt Camp – Karakol Town
Today is our last day of trekking, and it is mostly downhill. You will hike through a variety of landscapes, including forest cover, open pastures, and areas affected by landslides. The trail follows peaceful stretches of the river, where you might encounter horses grazing during the summer months. After 11 km of trekking to the first bridge of Karakol Gorge, we will be picked up by car and driven to Karakol. End of a trekking

Equipment and items for the trekking:
- Sleeping bag inner liner, sleeping bags are provided in the yurt camps.
- Sturdy trekking boots with proper ankle support and a reliable tread. It’s also advisable to carry an extra pair of shoes or sandals in case your main footwear gets wet during rain or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Waterproof rain jacket and trousers to protect you from rain and wet conditions.
- Warm clothing and extra layers for changing weather conditions.
- Hat and cap to shield yourself from the sun, along with sunglasses and high-factor sun cream to protect your skin.
- A daypack with a capacity of 30-40 liters and a rain cover to keep your belongings dry. It’s also a good idea to line your daypack with a quality plastic bag for added protection.
- Head-torch for navigating in low-light conditions or during nighttime.
- Water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the trek.
- Quick-drying towel for personal hygiene and drying off.
- A first aid kit, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or require specific medication.
These essential items will ensure your comfort, safety, and preparedness during the trekking adventure.
Physical requirements:
Participants must be in good physical condition, but don’t need any special skills of trekking. The differences of heights range from 600 m to 850 m in vertical elevation. The maximum elevation is 3 860 m.
